So Jack has this phobia of the lawnmower. Yes, you heard correctly. He's not afraid of thunder, but of the lawnmower. Weird dog. If he hears one he starts shaking really badly and if I'm in a different room he'll scratch on the door and whine nonstop. How do I help fix it? I know not to coddle him (and I don't) and if he's scratching on the door wanting to be in the same room with me I give him a firm no and he'll usually stop (had to do it this morning because it seemed EVERYONE on the block was freakin' mowing their lawn at 7 am) but he still whines until the lawnmower stops and if I'm sitting on the couch he has to be like ON me. I'd like him to just become indifferent to it if possible because having him pressed up against me every time he hears a lawnmower for the rest of his life is going to drive me nuts.

When Coal was a puppy (itty bitty, addorrible Coal ) He was terified of thunderstorms. We would give him warm milk and it seemed to help a little bit. Does he have a crate to sleep in, that he likes being in? If so, you could put the crate in the quietest part of the house, put him in it with a blanket over top and put on some music until the mowing passes. It would be like his safe zone, where he can get away from it and feel safe and relax without clawing through all your doors I know there's also holsitic medicines that are for stressed and anxious dogs... I just can't remember what they're called

How is Jack with your Mower? Brandy is fine with mine, (gas) but the second i fire up the weed whip (electric) she goes nuts. Different sounds for different hounds i guess. Also, is Jack familiar with those doing any close by mowing?

I just can't remember what they're called Bach flower remedies? Sorry to drag out an old thread, but i only just noticed it! Kato is also scared of the lawnmower, thunderstorms, powertools and even my kitchen whiz, we discovered the bach flower remedies, and visited a local homeopath who customized a mix of the bach remedies for him, we have several diffrent ones now, ones for when we are going to use loud tools or when storms are on the way, and ones to help him with his anxieties when we are away camping. They really do work to a certain extent quite nicely, we have always noticed a sense of calm after giving Kato his drops.

Actually I think I was probably thinking of that "Rescue Remedy" stuff, but probably the same thing I've never tried anything like that... though I wonder if it would help Linkin. He gets stressed and anxious very easily and will start to pace and whine like crazy. He's getting BETTER as he grows up, but very slowly.

Ahhh good old rescue remedy.........It is a mix of seven (i think its seven) of the bach flower essences to help with relaxation and calm. My mother in law has been recently diagnosed with parkinsons, and I bought her the rescue remedy to try and help with the shakes, she has continued buying it ever since then and claims that it has helped considerably when the shakes have been a bit more severe. I would not be without a straight up mix of the rescue remedy, but still like to customise the essences for specific issues if I can as it acts directly for the problem
Earlier this year I was having problems sleeping, and sleeping tablets barely made any diffrence, i had a batch of Bach Essence made up targetting the causes of the sleep deprivation and only in a matter of days after beginning the course my sleeping habits started falling back into a more suitable pattern.
On the plus side, these are all very cheap to have made up, a matter of only a few dollars to have a customised mixture made, and it is safe for everyone, elderly, very young, even your pets, plants or a few drops in the fish tank.

Very interesting... my mom's been having trouble sleeping and was prescribed a sleeping pill but would rather go a more natural route.
As for Linkin; even as I type this he's crying and pacing because there's a moose in our backyard. He woke me up at 7:00 because he was barking and going bonkers. Every time he'd settle down and I'd fall back to sleep I had maybe two minutes of sleep before he'd start up again. The general routine when he starts this (moose drive him NUTS) is to either put the tab or a leash on him and keep him with me and make him heel and down and work him to keep his mind off it. This works only to a degree though and when I first wake up (with a headache mind you) it's really hard to deal with. He gets so overworked from the moose outside that when I got up and told him to be quiet he was litterly panting in big gulps because he was too overworked.
Coal will bark at the moose and then when you tell him to be quiet he goes and lays down. He's a dream about it, but Linkin... good God! that high pitched whinning can drive a person nuts!
Where do you get it made up at?

You can get them online, but if possible I would suggest seeing a homeopath directly, at least for starters so you know what you should be looking for and so you know for certain that quality essences are being used. Once you are up and running with it online can be a cheaper option once you know what you are looking for, I have bought some really good ones of ebay. Usually the diffrence between the two is that a homeopath will probably make up a mixture with distilled water, good but only has a short shelf life, on line mixtures are usually preserved with brandy mixed in, giving a longer shelf life for the product, making them better if you are only considering the occasional "as needed" use. Homeopath will ask you all sorts of questions, to try and get to the root of the issue, and will then mix the remedy based on what they have discovered, not sure where you are, but here in australia, bigger health food stores or pharmacies will have a homeopath on site. Here is the link to the online store I use, in Australia i know, but they have some good info on the essences and what each is used for, which will give you a starting point anyway. www.sacred-space.com.au/bach-remedies.htmlThey even have a list of their pre- mix products for pets too, we have de-stress and sound sensitive for Kato, and have used the same ones bought for him on the cats, taylah and even myself.

Thanks for the info! I will deffinately look into it.
I highly doubt finding it here... I really don't think we have a homeopath in this town. I'm sure I could find on in PG though.
