I have inherited a 7 year old Schipperke. Or shpuld I say I got custody of him in my daughter's divorce. He has always been known for relieving himself in the house. He never learned to "tell" you when he needs to go out. In his former home he was let out in a fenced in area. And let out often. Here I need to leash and walk him. I take him out every couple hours, yet he will relieve himself in front of me. Help. What do I do?

When you say "I take him out every couple hours, yet he will relieve himself in front of me. " You mean he relieves himself indoors right? There is a bunch of info on housebreaking for puppies here: doggonegood.proboards62.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=puppies&thread=1202846744&page=1 There's the first post and then if you scroll down there's a second post with additional information. The most important thing with housebreaking is to be extremely consistant and patient! Watch the dog like a hawk, and never ever repremend for making a mess that wasn't caught in the act. Because this dog is 7 years old it's going to take a lot longer and it's going to be a lot harder to learn than a young puppy. Young puppies make the mistake of going inside because they don't yet know that's bad and generally, if you follow those points above and a few others that are in that topic, they learn quickly what the right thing to do is. With older dogs they already think going inside is acceptable and the right thing to do because they've been doing it for years. It's deffinatly going to be difficult, so good luck to you! If the information posted in that other thread doesn't seem to help, let me know and we'll try and find a new plan of action. But first try and stick to the regular house training method
