I've been reading recently about mismarked coat patterns among purebred dogs. Specifically, I've been reading about Labs... I found it to be quite interesting... You can find a lot of them at this website; www.woodhavenlabs.com/mismarks.htmlI think the mosaic is my favorite, they look so neat! Then of course, there's the "Silver Lab", which is actually genetically Chocolate... don't be fooled though, they do occur naturally but there are some less than responsible breeders out there mixing a bit of Weimeraner in there to produce the silver colour, jack up the price, and claim they have a rare colouring of the Lab... Apparently, the Silver lab is recognized by the AKC, but it is considered a chocolate lab. They DID have it recognized as Silver (since the standard calls for a "coat of solid colour") but once they discovered it was genetically chocolate they put it in that category. I'm assuming the other off markings aren't recognized as they are not solid. I don't know about the CKC recognizing Silver, as chocolate or not, but I did send them an e-mail and asked them about it. They're usually pretty good with replies so I should have the answer soon I just thought it was pretty interesting, and worth sharing. There are other breeds out there I'm sure that have non-standard coat colours or variations pop up. Such as the Long Haired Whippet:

I remember reading a few years ago about a German Shepherd breeder that had a color crop up like that of the first picture of the lab. Really interesting stuff! I wish I could remember the name of the kennel!

Abker - I did a search last night, looking for your mismarked shepherd and the best I could find was the "panda" mismark. More on silver labs, and very good read that has helped me understand a lot better (as a lot of the other stuff I've read I finished reading and still felt I had questions): www.woodhavenlabs.com/silverlabs.htmlOh, and the CKC does NOT recognize them, and apparently neither does the AKC
