Champion Foxlore Sammy Hits A Homer
Champion Foxlore Sammy Hits A Homer, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is No. 1 in Canada in the herding group and Pearl Maxfield, is the proud Prince George resident who owns him. She calls him Zach and he is the grandson of the famus Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Champion Foxlore Shafrhaus Sammy Sosa, named after the famous baseball player.
Zach is two and a half years old and has made his way through the ranks to achieve the status of being number one in the nation this year with professional handler, Cynthia Seeling.
Maxfield, who is the vice president of the Prince George Kennel Club, was unable to show Zach this year due to her lengthy recovery frm knee replacement surgery, so Zach has been traveling all over the country with Seeling and received Best in SHow two times, Reserve Best in Show two times, and is on top of his game right now, said Maxfield. She ordinarily shows her own dogs.
"He loves the show ring and he loves to travel," said Maxfield, who goes to watch him compete whenever she can.
Maxfield said her mother used to show German Shepherds.
"I swear when I was born I came out reaching for a leash of a German Shepherd," she said about her years of experience with show dogs and in her later years Maxfield decided to go to the smaller breed.
The rise to the top starts by acquiring 10 points as a champion winner, then the dog is in the special dog category and the animal will compete for Best in Breed, Best of the Group and Best in Show, said Maxfield.
"It's like a pyramid, you make it to the next level and at the end of a competition there are seven dogs left, representing the best in each category," said Maxfield.
"Those seven will go on to compete for Best in Show."
The Campbell River Show held in early August was the last one he competed in and he did very well under Australian, Sweden and Ontario judges, Maxfield added.
"I've always had a love of the Corgi and Zach is a wonderful dog to live with," she said. "The No. 1 ranked Corgi in Canada lives right here in little Prince George."
