For the past week or so, we have been noticing Harley's poop change. It has been very... gooey, like mucus or something in it. Evan took Harley with him to work yesterday (Friday) as he normally does, and he said Harley started to vomit up some foamy substance, so he called the vet to see if they could get him in by the end of the day. They had time to see him, so Evan brought him in while I was still at work.
He said the vet could tell that Harley was a bit bloated, and that his lower abdomen was a bit tender. The vet guessed that the mucus in Harley's poop is probably caused by some kind of bacterial infection (possibly colitis), so he gave Harley a shot of Cerenia, plus gave us an additional 4 tablets of Cerenia to be given over the next 4 days. Also, he gave us a once a day pill called Metronidazole to be given for 7 days.
In all, with the exam fee and medications, the visit cost $99. That little dog is expensive!! He still has to get his neutering before the end of the year.
We are supposed to feed chicken and rice to him today, 8 small meals. I had to work today, and Evan was home with him, and he said that Harley ate a few tablespoons every 1 1/2 hours, but after trying to feed him just now, he didn't want it. As long as he keeps it down, we aren't too worried. Otherwise, he seems to be fine. He has been playing with Bo and is being a normal puppy. To be safe, we didn't take him to his puppy training today (which is normally each Sat. at 3), and we are waiting for the trainer to call us to reschedule a make up class.
Ugh.. what we do for our dogs.
