My parents just got a new puppy. His name is Buddy Boy (will probably call him Buddy or Bud), he is a beagle/basset mix, and he is 5 months old. His previous owner, who works with my mom, only had him for 3 weeks and decided that she couldn't keep him. She got him from a foster, who got him through his original breeder. So, my parents are his 4th owners.
Buddy looks like a beagle with long ears. He is white with light brown markings, just like Bo. He has long legs and straight lower legs (unlike a Basset), and his eyes don't droop. He has that signature hound "bay" when he barks.
They have wanted another dog since I took Bo away from them in May. Buddy was free, so they took him. The poor thing has bounced around a lot already, and he needs a good home. He still needs his rabies shot and neutering, so of course there is no such thing as a "free" dog. But, he is an adorable little boy. We came over to visit today and brought Harley along with us. They ran all around the house, playing and slobbering on each other. Dawber, who is 13 years old, has come less intolerant of other dogs the older he gets, and he doesn't much care for Harley or Buddy. But, he will get used to Buddy, just as he got used to Bo 3 years ago.
We were over there for less than 2 hours, and Buddy peed in the house 4 times. My parents have never had a puppy before, so this will be an adventure. Dawber was 3 and fully house broken when they got him. I gave my parents a run down on all of the house breaking tips that I have picked up through having Harley, so they aren't going in to this blind, at least. They have a crate for him, and plan on getting a baby gate to keep him in the kitchen when they are both at work. My mom's friend, who doesn't work, lives down the street and can come over each day to let him outside. Also, my dad is on call with his work, so Buddy won't be home alone every day.
I think having another dog in the house will make it easier when Dawber goes to the "Rainbow Bridge", which will probably be in the next year or two.
